The Carolina Panthers are facing a severe shortage at cornerback ahead of the 2026 NFL trade deadline. Josh Edwards of CBS Sports reports the team is down its first- and second-string players, with Jaycee Horn, Mike Jackson, and Akayleb Evans all currently on injured reserve. A hamstring injury forced Will Lee III out of the Thursday night loss to the Green Bay Packers as the situation deteriorated.

With only Chau Smith-Wade and rookie Malcolm DeWalt IV healthy on the active roster, the team must act. Edwards proposes five potential trade targets for Carolina: Riq Woolen, Donte Jackson, Alontae Taylor, Amik Robertson, and Nahshon Wright. Greg Auman of FOX Sports specifically highlighted Riq Woolen as a priority, noting the coaching connections. "There's so much of a Seattle presence in Carolina between head coach Dave Canales and general manager Dan Morgan, both longtime Seahawks guys and where Tariq Woolen began his career," he wrote.

Fantasy impact

This instability creates a massive opportunity for fantasy managers to target wide receivers facing the Panthers' backup secondary. The upcoming matchup on Sunday, Nov. 8 against the Denver Broncos will feature a defensive unit relying on practice squad players like Marco Wilson. Auman concluded that the current depth is insufficient for contention, stating, "Backups aren't likely going to get them a repeat division title, so upgrading the secondary would be a priority if they were to be active at the trade deadline."

What to do

Start Denver Broncos wide receivers against the Carolina secondary this week. The Panthers are missing their top three cornerbacks and have only two healthy options on the active roster to defend the passing game.

Monitor the Panthers' trade activity before Sunday, but expect the backup corners to face significant pressure. The Broncos will likely exploit this depth chart hole in the 1:00 PM ET matchup at Bank of America Stadium.
